After the collapse of the Soviet L world had 15 new A nations to relate to. Azerbaijan is e of three independent Lrepublics in Caucasia. For most of the twentieth century the country has been more or less closed to outsiders. Its geographical situation - where East meets West – has left its mark on Azerbaijan. It is an ethnic melting-pot, embracing the ancient mountain peoples of the Caucasus as well as the cultivated cosmopolitan capital, Baku. Azerbaijan's recently acquired freedom is overshadowed by the war with Armenia over the region of Nagorno Karabakh. Nevertheless, the country is trying to find its place on the international arena and extends a welcome to oil workers, tourists and missionaries.
