Author's account and images of a modern day expedition across Arabia's great southern desert. Intrepid traveller and photojournalist Bruce Kirby has spent much of the last 10 years in arduous environments. For 40 days and nights, during the winter of 1999, he travelled by camel across Arabia’s great southern desert – the legendary Empty Quarter – marking the first camel crossing of the Quarter in more than 50 years. Together with fellow Canadians Jamie and Leigh Clarke and three Omani Bedu, Kirkby travelled more than 1,200 kilometres across a remote and largely unexplored desert wilderness. His account and images of the expedition are fascinating and provide many cultural insights.
